Teaching and Activities
Over twenty experienced and dedicated instructors who have at least a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, TESL/TEFL (Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language) or related field of expertise are employed at the Centre. The instructors bring a wealth of global experience and are able to draw upon knowledge of applied linguistics as well as current trends in language learning pedagogy and emerging multi-media technologies as they implement integrated-skill courses in English. In addition, the ELC conducts activities, and other special events to develop learners’ fluency and confidence in English.
During the regular academic year, the ELC offers a variety of courses and electives. The Summer Bridge Programme is an intensive English course, which prepares prospective undergraduates to develop essential language skills necessary in the university.
The English Writing and Communication Centre (EWCC) was established in 2003. Its mission is to support UM students as they emerge as competent writers and confident users of the English language. In the Writing Centre, tutors work collaboratively with students from all disciplines and levels to guide them through their writing processes. Apart from writing consultations, the Writing Centre also offers a variety of academic support such as speaking consultations, academic/study-skills workshops, chat rooms, and other English-related activities. It also publishes an annual student-authored magazine the EWCC Review for the reading pleasure of the UM community.
