Dr. Lindsay Miller, Associate Professor from City University of Hong Kong delivered a guest lecture on 27 September 2017. In this presentation, Dr. Lindsay Miller outlines the dimensions to consider when preparing a General Education (GE) course for second language learners so as to improve both their content knowledge and language proficiency. The GE course described uses a progressive pedagogy approach by way of content-based instruction to integrate vertical and horizontal learning and encourage learner autonomy as a way for students to become critically engaged with their language learning via sporting themes. Examples of learners’ feedback about the course, based on its content, communication strategies used, cognitive development and cultural perspectives, are presented. The learners’ responses illustrate that they are able to develop critical language competencies if they are presented with content which stimulates them and is relevant to their popular cultural experiences.
